Making pictures is one of my super powers! I have had an art practice of some sort since childhood. As a graphic artist with a true love of illustration, I found my art practice of late slipping into a restrictive place. Although the process of creating an illustration from purpose to vision, planning, sketching, re-sketching, executing and perfecting eventually produced the work Iād envisioned, by the time I got to that point I was sick and tired of the project as a whole. It was a cerebral trap. I had thought, controlled the joy right out of making art.
Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon an art-making method that required complete abandonment of all of the above. Where pre-conceived compositions and cerebral gymnastics are banished. Play is restored. Instead of expressing a story known I have become a character/collaborator/conduit of a story as it unfolds. Like life, only today's layer is revealed today. As days pass and layers accrue the storyline may make about as much sense as a dream or it may reveal itself with laser-like clarity offering direction to the emerging work. What an adventure! The only prerequisites are canvas, acrylics, tools for mark making, time for mark making and a burgeoning seed of trust that the artist within will know what to do next.
Ancaro imparo!
